September 2008
While the fall represents the end of summer, it also constitutes the beginning of another school year - a time of renewed friendships and a rejuvenated enthusiasm for the wonder of learning. The importance of the historic back to school ritual cannot be underestimated. Education is the foundation of opportunity and an absolutely necessary focus for our communities at large.
We recently had NHL hockey hero Jordin Tootoo touring Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. In addition to the excitement he brings to each community visit, JordinŐs focus on the youth of the North is a worthy and commendable activity and he serves as an important role model for young people whether they are interested in sports or not. His message is a simple yet effective one: our children can follow their dreams. But they have to stay in school. Without an education many roads down which they may choose to travel will turn out to be dead ends. The challenge is for us as a community to collectively ensure that our children embrace every opportunity to learn and succeed. It is also critical to make certain they understand that the destination makes the trip down the path of learning worthwhile, even if the going is tough some of the time.
Canadian North takes very seriously its participation in the NorTerra Employment and Career Development Program. The airline has a great many interesting and varied jobs which provide endless opportunities for well paid careers and advancement. We relish the opportunity to employ Northerners in every facet of our business. We also welcome the chance to work together with all our communities to make our childrenŐs dreams a reality.
So the challenge is for each of us to look for ways to promote the importance of a good education, no matter the age of the student, to foster opportunities for learning and advancement and to celebrate the successes which will occur as a result.
Travel well.
