ABOUT US: PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

April/May 2009

The Nunavut Mining Symposium has become an important forum for the exchange of information on the current and future status of mining projects within Nunavut, updates on geoscience activities, regulatory and environmental issues, and community engagement. And while exploration and mining activity has declined substantially from the heady days of 2008 for many companies, the industry as a whole continues to be relevant and important for all Northerners.

In this the twelfth year of the Symposium, Canadian North is proud to be a co-sponsor of the Nunavut Mining Awards and Banquet together with Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited. Partnerships with those who are making long-term investments within any region of Nunavut or the Northwest Territories are a key feature of Canadian North’s own commitment to the sustainability of the North. In the case of Agnico-Eagle, their Meadowbank mine project near Baker Lake and their investment in Comaplex’s Meliadine gold project in the same area are prime examples of this enduring involvement in the future well being of those living in the Kivalliq region. These projects will provide direct jobs and training opportunities as well as supporting a strong secondary wave of similar activities for their partners and suppliers. This is what community engagement is all about and where companies working together can most effectively take steps to ensure they leave a legacy that their shareholders and future generations will look upon with pride.

Northerners deserve to play a role in and receive recognition for the utilization of their resources. Responsible development with lasting benefits for local people and businesses should be the cornerstone of any venture in the North. The value of forums such as the Nunavut Mining Symposium is to ensure that those who come to the North share this long term view of their participation in the local economy and meet the players who can help them move in this direction.

As always we are proud to be a participant in this vital and exciting industry by supplying an essential transportation link for many mining and exploration projects.

Travel well.
Tracy Medve
