May 10, 2016 - Update on our operations to areas affected by Northern Alberta wildfires

Over the past week, Canadian North’s team members have been proud to support our oil sands clients as they respond to the Northern Alberta wildfires. These companies have generously opened their sites as places of refuge for thousands of people (and pets) impacted by the fires. At their request, our airline has operated hundreds of extra flights, moving thousands of people and tons of supplies. We will continue to support our clients with extra flights as long as necessary, and we are truly honoured to assist them in their outstandingly kind and caring response to the events of the past week.

In terms of specific statistics, from Wednesday May 4 to Sunday May 8, Canadian North operated 294 charter flights to and from sites around Fort McMurray on behalf of our oil sands clients, carrying 16,618 passengers. This is an absolutely outstanding accomplishment that has only been possible through dedication and cooperation from every one of our team members.

The level of care and concern shown by our team has been overwhelming from the very beginning, and continues to drive our response to this crisis. Many of the passengers who have flown with us are evacuees who have lost their homes and belongings. With the support of our oil sands clients, our team has done our absolute best to treat those in our care with warmth and compassion, and provide common sense solutions to countless special circumstances.

The safety of our passengers and employees is always our number one priority. We are pleased to report that we have had no reported injuries or safety occurrences relative to our Fort McMurray rescue operations. We will continue to put the safety of our passengers and employees above everything else during these long and busy days.

Our team members have been deeply moved by the many social media comments, private messages, emails and telephone calls commending their actions, as well as the media coverage we have been included in. We quickly mobilized last week because we have the means to assist, and we believed it was the right thing to do. While none of us have sought recognition, we are tremendously proud of the recognition that which we have received. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to us, from the bottom of our hearts.

We continue to receive generous offers of donations to be forwarded to people impacted by the wildfires. The Canadian Red Cross has been doing outstanding work coordinating relief efforts, so we would suggest donating to assist their Alberta Fire Relief Campaign. Donations can be made to the Red Cross via their website, by phone at 1-800-418-1111, or by texting REDCROSS to 30333.

The people of Fort McMurray remain in all of our hearts and we will continue to do all we can to provide support in the coming days and weeks.

Thank you to all,
The Canadian North Team
