Unaccompanied Travel by Children

Every day northern communities entrust Canadian North with safely delivering precious cargo – and none more precious than our youngest travelers.

Conditions of Acceptance for Unaccompanied Minor (UM) Travel

  • Children under 12 years of age but who are at least 5 years old that are travelling without a parent/guardian must travel under the conditions of an unaccompanied minor. 

  • Young adults 12-17 years old can optionally travel as an UM at the request of their parent/guardian. All UM conditions, restrictions and fees apply. Note: young adults travelling as an UM cannot accompany anyone under 12 years old.

  • UMs can travel on Canadian North direct and through flights as well as Canadian North flights that connect to other Canadian North flights..

  • The parent or guardian arranging for UM travel must complete and sign an UM form (UM Form AS-017) which is available at our airports and which must be completed at time of check-in. Contact information and identification is required from both the parent/guardian dropping the child off for the departure flight and the parent/guardian picking up the child at the arrival station.

  • We also recommend that any children travelling as UMs also have identification, and in the case of shared custody, a letter from the other parent/guardian approving their travel.

  • If your child has a medical condition- prior medical approval will be required and a T-43 form must be completed and sent to our MEDA desk at least 48 hours prior to departure. Incapacitated Passenger Declaration Form (Form T43)

  • An Unaccompanied Minor (UM) service fee of $100.00 plus applicable taxes applies for each direction of travel. This fee is refundable if the UM passenger does not travel. 

  • If two or more unaccompanied minors from the same family are booked and ticketed and travelling together, only one service fee will apply.

Restrictions for Unaccompanied Minor (UM) Travel

  • Unaccompanied minors can NOT be transferred from or to Canadian North. We are unable to transfer or retrieve Unaccompanied Minors to or from other air carriers.

  • We are unable to offer this program for children who are visually impaired, hard of hearing or deaf, or if they have an allergy that requires them to travel with an EPI-pen.

  • A pet may not travel with an UM.

  • Unaccompanied minors will not be accepted on flights that have been re-routed or which may bypass the final destination due to irregular operations, including flights with weather warnings. The child will only be accepted if the parent or guardian purchases a ticket to accompany them. Canadian North will rebook the unaccompanied minor onto the next available Canadian North flight at no charge, regardless of fare paid.

  • In the event of en-route delays or diversions, Canadian North will assist in making alternate arrangements for the child’s travel and if a delay results in an overnight stay requirement, the parent or guardian of the child will be notified and will need to make arrangements for care of the child.

Departure
On the day of travel, the adult bringing the child to the airport must arrive at the airport at least one hour prior to scheduled departure to complete all necessary forms. The adult must stay with them until boarding, and remain in the airport until the flight’s departure. Gate passes are available for adults accompanying UMs through security screening checkpoints. You are also required to be available (via phone) until the aircraft has arrived and your child has been transferred to the pick-up parent/guardian in their destination city. It's a good idea to arrange your schedule so that you can remain at the airport if the departure is delayed. Make sure the parent/guardian putting your child on the return flight also understands this requirement. All UMs will be provided with an UM Identification pouch which they must wear at all times.

Arrival
Unaccompanied minors must be met by the individual designated for pick-up as documented on the UM form and that individual must provide proof of identification before the UM can be released. The guardian picking up the child is required to arrive at the airport at least 10 minutes prior to the flight's scheduled time of arrival. Ensure that guardians transporting your child to and from the airport have a copy of the child's itinerary and proof of identification .
Services Canadian North provides for UMs:

  • Verify that the child’s flight is operating as scheduled. In the event of delays or diversions, Canadian North will assist in making alternate arrangements with you for the child's travel.
  • Ensure completion of required documentation.
  • Assign seating convenient for Flight Attendant supervision.
  • Identify your child to the gate agents and flight attendants, and provide an ID Tag to be worn by your child at all times.
  • Pre-board your child.
  • Escort the child to the arrivals area and release him or her to the designated person only upon verifying picture ID and receiving a signature.

Travel Tips for UMs

  • We encourage you to pack any essential items your child may need in their carry-on baggage, including some of their favourite items and extra snacks for their enjoyment inflight. An emergency contact list your child can keep on their person is also recommended.

Expectant Mothers:

Canadian North accepts expectant mothers for travel up to and including her 36th week (8th month) of gestation providing there is no previous history of premature labour or any other medical complications.

Expectant mothers in their ninth month of pregnancy will be accepted for travel ONLY if the following conditions are met:

  • The passengers physician or midwife must complete a T-43 form which states the estimated date of birth and declares the expectant mother is fit for travel. Click here to download the form.
  • The form must be faxed to our MEDA desk at least 48 hours in advance of the travel date, at 1-866-437-5381.
  • The passenger’s due date must not occur within 7 days of travel and the passenger must not be in labor at time of travel.

Note: Expectant mothers must place their seat belt low on the hips and fasten under the belly. Flight attendants can provide a seat belt extension for comfort if required.
Air travel is not recommended at any time during pregnancy for women who have medical or obstetric conditions that may be complicated by air travel or require emergency care.

New Mothers and New Infants:

New mothers and new born infants will not be accepted for air travel until seven days after birth unless an attending physician completes a (T43 form) stating that the new mother or new born infant is fit for air travel. Download, complete and fax an Incapacitated Passenger Declaration Form (Form T43) to our MEDA Desk at 1-866-437-5381.

Note: In lieu of a T43 form, Canadian North will also accept the following as confirmation that the newborn infant is fit for travel:

  • A medical clearance form from the Stanton Territorial Health Authority (SRH#6100-0S9-01 form)
  • A F29/1207 OR F29/1110 form from the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Health and Social Services

Infants

Infants under a week old can only be accepted for air travel upon the completion of a T43 Incapacitated Passenger Declaration Form, or with a doctor's certificate clearing them for travel.

There must be one adult per infant if the child is an infant under 2 years of age.Transport Canada mandates no person shall be responsible for more than one infant (under two years of age) on board. For example, infant twins would need two persons, 12 years of age or older, to travel with them.

Accepted Restraint Systems

Canadian North does not supply infant/child restraint systems but will accept transport approved systems that may be included as part of our allowable checked or carry-on luggage, providing the system meets all safety standards. Any additional excess (overweight/oversized) baggage fee will be charged if applicable. A restraint device that cannot be restrained due to size, design, or damage must be transported as checked baggage as it cannot be stowed under the seats or in the overhead bins.

Canadian manufactured systems

A compliance label must be affixed stating the system has been certified to the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 213 or 213.1, and the label must also indicate the date of manufacture as being after January 1, 1981.

American manufactured systems

For systems manufactured in the U.S. between January 1, 1981 and February 25, 1985, must have a label that states: “This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards” (FMVSS).
For systems manufactured in the U.S. after February 26, 1985 two labels are required:

  1. "This child restraint system conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)" and
  2. "CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT" in red lettering.

CARES™ child restraint devices: CARES™ child restraint devices are designed for children ages 1 to 4, weighing between 10-20 kg (22-44 lbs.), whose height is 100 cm (40 inches) or less and who are capable of sitting upright. They must be used within the limitations specified by the manufacturer (as indicated on the label), and must display the following:

  • Legible CARES™ label with approval standards (FAA approved in accordance with 14 CFR 21.305 (d) and approved for aircraft use only).
  • Part number 4082-1 on label

Types of accepted Infant and Child Restraint Systems

  1. Rear-facing infant restraint systems are generally restricted to infants weighing less than 9 kg/ 20 lbs., though weight restrictions are specified on the system and can vary from one system to another.
  2. Forward facing child restraint systems are generally restricted to children between 9- 18 kg (20 – 40 lbs.) though Weight restrictions are specified on the system and can vary from one system to another.
  3. Convertible (forward or rear-facing) restraint systems: The term "convertible" is often used by manufacturers to describe restraint systems which can be used as a rear-facing restraint system for an infant and as a forward-facing restraint system for a child.

  • Booster cushions
  • Booster seats, including combination restraint systems labeled with CMVSS 213.2
  • Belly or loop belts
  • Infant carriers (such as Snugli®)
