Canadian North Gala to Celebrate Artistic Excellence in Nunavut

IQALUIT, Nunavut – Canadian North, an Inuit owned airline, is hosting the Canadian North Gala – A Seriously Artistic Expression, on Nunavut Day to celebrate the unique creative voice of Nunavut’s artistic community.

Nunavut Commissioner Ann Meekitjuk Hanson will be joined at the gala by Premier Paul Okalik, Canadian North President Tom Ruth and other special guests to honour this year’s recipient of the Commissioner’s Arts Award and celebrate the vibrant heritage of Nunavut. “Nunavut Day is the perfect time to honor our artists,” said Hanson. “Their work supports our economy, encourages appreciation of our language and culture and brings international recognition to the rich and diverse artistic styles of our people.”

The Canadian North Gala, wrapping up Nunavut Day celebrations in Iqaluit, will begin with dinner. Traditional and modern entertainment from across the territory will follow including singer/songwriter Charlie Panigoniak and the Hip Hop dance troupe Kaiva and many others.

“The Canadian North Gala is a unique and engaging way to showcase our arts and cultural traditions,” said Okalik. “We take great pride in our creativity in the arts. This creativity, recognized throughout the world, is contributing to our expanding economy, offering exciting opportunities and increased prosperity in the future.”

At the Canadian North Gala a $1000 bursary, recognizing an outstanding Nunavut Arctic College arts student, will be presented by Canadian North. “Being a 100 per cent aboriginally owned airline, Canadian North believes Nunavut Day should be celebrated by its people in a special way,” said Ruth. “Honoring the diverse culture of Nunavut with the Commissioner’s Arts Award and a Canadian North bursary helps to bring together the traditions of the past and inspires growth for the future.”

Tickets will be available end of May. Funds raised from the gala ticket sales will be given to several Nunavut charities.
